Description
The Decoy Sonoma Merlot is a radiant expression of California's celebrated winemaking legacy. Nestled in the lush landscapes of Sonoma County, this wine draws from a region renowned for producing fruit-forward and approachable Merlots. With an ABV of 13.9%, this wine captures the essence of rich, ripe fruit which is a hallmark of Californian reds. Expect a vibrant palate dominated by ripe raspberry and blackberry, interwoven with subtle undertones of mocha and chocolate, typical of wines that benefit from the warmth of the California sun. The tannins are characteristically soft, offering a gentle structure that makes for an inviting and smooth drinking experience. When it comes to serving, allow the Decoy Sonoma Merlot to breathe slightly by decanting for 20-30 minutes before serving. This brief aeration will help reveal the wine's nuanced layers, enhancing its aromatic profile. Serve it slightly below room temperature, around 60-65°F (15-18°C), to preserve its delicate balance of fruit and secondary notes. A wide-bowled glass, like a Bordeaux or large Merlot glass, is ideal, as it allows the wine to aerate while concentrating its complex aromas. This Merlot is not only versatile but also food-friendly, making it a delightful companion to a variety of dishes. Its bold fruit and gentle tannins pair exquisitely with roasted duck or braised beef, where the wine's acidity cuts through the richness of the meat, complementing the dish's savory tones. For a vegetarian option, consider a mushroom risotto or a lentil stew, where the earthy components resonate with the wine's subtle mocha undertones. Although this wine is crafted for enjoyment in its youth, it has the potential to be cellared for a few years, allowing the flavors to meld further and the texture to soften even more.

Kicked back with a glass after dinner and it was way stronger than I expected for a Merlot. Smooth but definitely felt that 13.9 by the end. Solid, just needs a hearty meal to go with it.
