Description
anCnoc 24 Year Old is a Speyside single malt from Knockdhu Distillery in Knock, Aberdeenshire, bottled at 46% ABV. The higher bottling strength is a practical detail as well as a spec: at 46% the whisky carries more texture and aromatic weight than the 40% bottlings common in this age bracket. The reference notes also state it is non-chill filtered and naturally coloured, so the liquid is not stripped of oils or tinted. Expect a slight haze if it is served very cold, which is harmless and a normal trait of non-chill-filtered whisky. The distillery has a reputation for a lighter, fruit-forward, slightly malty house style rather than a heavy or smoky one, and a 24-year-old expression usually shows how that style mellows with long maturation. No tasting notes are supplied for this bottling, so treat the following as what aged Speyside malts typically offer: dried orchard fruit, honey, soft vanilla and malted barley, with gentle oak spice and a drier, woody edge after more than two decades in cask. Peat smoke is not typical of this style. Sweetness tends to be restrained and the finish long but quiet. Pour it neat first. A malt of this age gives the most information at room temperature with nothing added, and the 46% strength is easy to manage without dilution. Once you have sorted out the nose and palate, add a few drops of room-temperature water, no more, to loosen the aromas and see whether the fruit or the oak comes forward. Ice is a poor match here: it numbs the delicate top notes you are paying for and mutes the finish. A Glencairn glass is the best vessel for the first few sips. The tapered bowl gathers the aromatics and lets you nose the whisky without the alcohol overwhelming it. A heavy-bottomed rocks glass is fine for a relaxed pour later in the evening, but it spreads the aroma out and the nuance is harder to follow. This is a bottle for sipping rather than mixing. Using a 24-year-old malt in an Old Fashioned, Manhattan or Whiskey Sour would bury the aged character under sugar, bitters or citrus, and a Highball would dilute it past usefulness. For food, keep it light: a few squares of dark chocolate, salted almonds or a mild aged cheese will suit the dried fruit and oak without competing with them.
