Description

This Speyside single malt from Glenrothes is bottled at 43% ABV and carries an 18-year age statement. The distributor describes it as matured in oak casks, with a substantial share of sherry-seasoned casks, and says it offers fruit, vanilla and gentle spice. That cask mix is the key to its character. Sherry wood typically contributes dried fruit, orange peel and baking spice, and refill or American oak adds vanilla and soft grain sweetness. Expect a rounded, fruit-led malt with little peat or smoke, in line with Speyside's usual style. Treat those notes as typical of the style, not a measured profile of this bottling. At 43%, the whisky is easy to drink neat, and that is the best way to meet it first. Pour a measure into a Glencairn glass and let it sit for a few minutes before nosing, so the fruit and vanilla have time to open. If the spice feels tight, a few drops of room-temperature water will loosen the aroma without flattening the palate. Ice is a poor match for a malt of this age. Cold dulls the delicate fruit and oak notes, and a large cube melting in the glass dilutes a whisky that is already bottled at a modest strength. If you prefer it cooler, a single large cube in a rocks glass is the gentlest option. The rocks glass also suits slower, relaxed sipping once you have finished nosing. Mixing is possible but rarely the best use of an 18-year-old bottle. If you do, a Manhattan is the most sensible choice. The sherried fruit and spice sit comfortably alongside sweet vermouth and bitters, and a stirred drink keeps the whisky's character intact. An Old Fashioned made with a small measure of sugar and a dash of bitters can work too, as long as you go light on the sweetener. A Whiskey Sour or a tall Highball would bury the subtle oak and fruit under citrus or soda, and those drinks are better made with a younger, less expensive malt. For food, a sherry-influenced Speyside malt like this one goes well with dark chocolate, roasted nuts, aged hard cheeses and baked fruit desserts. Their richness picks up the dried fruit and gentle spice that the cask profile suggests.
