Rodney StrongMontepulciano wine is a red made from the Montepulciano grape, best known as Montepulciano d'Abruzzo from Italy's Abruzzo region. It is usually medium to full in body, with dark cherry and plum fruit, soft tannins and a dry finish, and it suits pizza, pasta with meat sauce, grilled sausages and aged cheeses. It is not the same as Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which is a Tuscan wine made mainly from Sangiovese. For more Italian reds, see the Italian Red page. The rest of the wine section covers the other ways people choose: reds such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and red blends; whites such as Pinot Grigio and Chenin Blanc, which run lighter and crisper, and Chardonnay, which is often fuller-bodied; sweeter styles such as White Zinfandel; and dry sherry. Makers on the shelf include Beringer, Sutter Home, Bota Box, Layer Cake, Kourtaki, Taylor and Stowell. If you want sparkling, Prosecco is a dry to off-dry Italian sparkling wine, and Côtes du Rhône is a French red blend led by Grenache.
