Description

Azulejos Talavera Reposado is a 100% blue Weber agave tequila from Jalisco, Mexico, bottled at 40% ABV and rested in oak. The bottle is a hand-painted Talavera-style ceramic, and that is the first thing most people notice. The liquid inside is a conventional, approachable reposado. Expect cooked agave up front, with vanilla and light oak spice behind it, finishing smooth and gently sweet. That is the typical profile for the style, and the producer's own description points the same way. A reposado sits in the middle of the tequila range. A blanco, or silver, is unaged or rested only briefly, so it shows the raw agave: peppery, citrusy and vegetal. A reposado spends at least two months in oak. That is enough to soften the edges and add vanilla, caramel and mild baking spice without covering the agave. Añejo is aged at least a year and Extra Añejo at least three. Those lean toward deeper wood, dried fruit and a drier, more brandy-like finish. This bottle is the easiest to place of the group. It has more roundness than a blanco, but the agave is still easy to taste, which makes it a good first step into aged tequila. Neat, it works well in a caballito or a small tulip-shaped tasting glass. Pour a modest measure at room temperature and let it open for a minute. The vanilla and cooked agave come forward as it warms, and a short rest in the glass is worth the wait. If you prefer it cooler, a rocks glass with one large cube slows the dilution and takes the edge off the alcohol without flattening the oak notes. A wedge of orange suits it better than lime, because it echoes the sweetness instead of fighting it. In cocktails, a reposado like this one is a good fit for a Margarita. The oak adds a rounder, slightly richer drink than a blanco would. Use fresh lime juice and a modest amount of orange liqueur, and serve it in a salt-rimmed rocks glass over ice. It also works in a Paloma, where grapefruit soda and a squeeze of lime play well against the vanilla. A Ranch Water, which is tequila, lime and sparkling mineral water over ice in a tall glass, is better made with a blanco if you want a crisp, agave-forward drink. A reposado gives it a softer, slightly sweeter character, so it suits people who find the blanco version too sharp.
