Description
Gunpowder Sardinian Citrus Gin is a citrus-led gin that pairs Mediterranean citrus botanicals with the juniper backbone any gin needs. The name and brief point to Sardinian-style citrus, so expect bright peel oils on the nose: lemon, orange or bergamot-type zest, with juniper's pine and resin sitting underneath instead of leading. Gins built this way usually taste clean and zesty up front, with a gently bitter peel note on the finish. The citrus is the first thing you'll notice, and the juniper keeps the spirit recognisably gin. That balance makes it a natural Gin & Tonic gin. Fill a balloon glass or tall highball with plenty of large, cold ice, pour 50 ml of gin, and top with about 120 to 150 ml of a light, crisp tonic. A strongly flavoured or sweet tonic will bury the citrus, so choose a neutral one. Garnish with a wide strip of lemon or orange peel, twisted over the glass to release its oils, or add a sprig of rosemary or thyme for a savoury, herbal edge. Pink grapefruit peel is another good match for a citrus-forward gin. Beyond the G&T, a Tom Collins is probably the easiest place to show off the profile. Shake gin with fresh lemon juice and sugar syrup, strain over ice into a tall glass, and top with soda. The botanical citrus reinforces the lemon rather than competing with it. In a Martini, a citrus-forward gin tends to give a lighter, brighter drink. Stir 60 ml of gin with 10 ml of dry vermouth over ice, strain into a chilled coupe, and finish with a lemon twist rather than an olive. In a Negroni, expect the gin to lift the bitterness of Campari with orange-peel brightness. It will read less piney than a classic London Dry, so use an orange twist and a good sweet vermouth to keep it from feeling thin. Served neat, keep it cold from the freezer or over a single large cube so the citrus stays crisp. It also suits light seafood, grilled vegetables and salty snacks like olives or marcona almonds, where the peel notes work like a squeeze of fresh lemon.
