Pour a small measure neat first, since a bourbon with this much barrel character shows its structure best without dilution. Then add a few drops of room-temperature water. Water loosens the tight aromatics and softens any alcohol heat, so the sweeter vanilla and caramel notes come forward over the oak. Ice works too, but it mutes aroma and sweetness as it chills, so use one large cube rather than several small ones to keep dilution slow. For glassware, a Glencairn is the better tool for the first pour. The tapered bowl concentrates the aroma, so you can sort out oak, spice and sweetness before you taste. After that, a heavy rocks glass is the natural choice for slow sipping over a single cube. In cocktails, a bourbon with firm oak and a Texas-style weight holds its own where lighter whiskeys get lost.
