Description
Kokuto Umeshu by CHOYA is a distinguished Japanese plum wine that artfully combines the deep, earthy sweetness of kokuto, or black sugar, with the vibrant, sweet-tart notes of ume plums. Originating from Osaka, this wine presents an intriguing profile that is both smooth and aromatic, making it a noteworthy choice for those who appreciate unique flavor experiences. With an ABV of 14.5%, it offers a balanced interplay of flavors, where the natural sweetness of the black sugar complements the juicy tartness of the plums, creating a harmonious finish that lingers softly on the palate. This wine is best served slightly chilled to fully appreciate its nuanced flavors. A temperature between 10-13°C (50-55°F) allows the sweetness and tartness to shine without overwhelming the senses. While Kokuto Umeshu does not require decanting, serving it in a standard wine glass or a traditional Japanese glass can enhance the drinking experience by allowing the aromas to develop as you sip, offering a fuller taste profile with each pour. Kokuto Umeshu pairs exceptionally well with a variety of dishes. Its unique flavor profile complements spicy Asian cuisine, balancing out heat with its subtle sweetness. It also pairs beautifully with savory dishes like grilled meats and richer fare, as the wine's acidity and sweetness can cut through the richness, providing a refreshing contrast. For dessert, try it alongside light, fruity options such as sorbets or fruit tarts, where its sweet-tart character can mirror and elevate the dish. This plum wine is a drink-now choice, offering immediate enjoyment with its distinct and captivating flavors. While it can be enjoyed on its own as an aperitif, its versatility shines when paired with food, bringing a touch of Japanese elegance to any dining experience.

Usually grab Takara plum wine but tried Kokuto Umeshu for something different. This one's richer and sweeter, nice change but I'd save it for dessert next time.
