Description
Shochu Jun by Takara offers a unique exploration into the world of Japanese spirits, despite being categorized alongside wine and sake. Originating from the historically rich Kyoto region, this shochu stands out with its clean and refined character, boasting an ABV of 25%, which is slightly higher than most wines, yet it presents a smoothness that is remarkably approachable. Expect a tasting experience that reveals subtle hints of the ingredients' origins, with a gentle, polished finish that invites contemplation rather than overpowering the senses. Shochu Jun's versatility is a defining feature, making it suitable for a variety of serving methods. Neat, it allows the pure essence of this Japanese creation to unfold, while serving it on the rocks introduces a softer, more diluted profile that can highlight different nuances as the ice melts. Its clean taste also makes it an excellent base for cocktails, where it can provide a nuanced backbone without overshadowing other ingredients. When considering glassware, a simple and elegant tumbler or a traditional ochoko cup allows for the appreciation of its clarity and aroma. In terms of food pairings, Shochu Jun complements a broad range of dishes, from sushi and sashimi to grilled meats and savory vegetable dishes. Its clean profile acts as a palate cleanser, making it particularly well-suited to meals that benefit from balance and subtlety. Since this shochu does not demand aging, it is best enjoyed fresh, capturing the spirit's intended purity and finesse. While decanting is not necessary, allowing it a moment to breathe can enhance the aromatics and overall experience. Serving at a slightly chilled temperature can further highlight its crisp, refreshing qualities, particularly when enjoyed neat or as part of a minimalist cocktail.

Had this first at a sushi spot in Cambridge and finally tracked it down here. Neat or with soda, still as clean as I remembered, just wish they sold it in bigger bottles.
