Description

Santa Margherita's Chianti Classico Riserva comes from the Chianti Classico zone in Tuscany. The wine is built mainly on Sangiovese, and "Riserva" means it spent a longer maturation period before release than the producer's standard Chianti Classico. The label doesn't give a vintage, ABV or oak regime, so what follows describes the style you can expect, not a measured profile of this bottle. Sangiovese-led Riserva wines from this area typically show sour cherry, red plum and dried strawberry on the nose. Savory notes often come with them: dried herbs, leather, tobacco leaf, and sometimes a trace of tomato leaf or balsamic sweetness as the wine matures. Expect a medium to medium-plus body with the grippy, fine-grained tannin Sangiovese is known for, and the bright, mouth-watering acidity that makes Chianti Classico so useful at the table. Longer ageing usually adds spice and a gentler oak influence (vanilla, clove, a little cedar) without covering the fruit. The finish tends to be dry, savory and moderately long. That acidity and tannin point toward tomato-based and fatty dishes. Ragù over pappardelle, lasagne, and roast pork with rosemary and garlic are all natural matches. Bistecca alla fiorentina, grilled lamb chops and braised short rib also suit it, since the tannin cuts through the fat. Aged pecorino, Parmigiano-Reggiano and mushroom risotto are good choices if you want something lighter. Very spicy food and delicate fish dishes tend to clash with the tannin. Serve it at about 16 to 18°C, which is slightly cooler than a warm dining room. Fifteen minutes in the fridge before opening usually gets it there. A Riserva of this type often opens up with 30 to 45 minutes in a decanter or open in a large-bowled glass, which softens the tannin and brings out the aromatics. A standard red wine glass with a generous bowl works well, and a tapered Burgundy-style glass will concentrate the cherry and floral notes. It's approachable now with decanting and food. Wines in this category often reward a few more years of cellaring, when the fruit turns more savory and the tannin relaxes, but it doesn't need long keeping to be enjoyable.
