Angostura Aromatic Bitter

In the world of mixology, few ingredients hold as iconic a status as Angostura Aromatic Bitters. Born in Venezuela in 1824 and crafted by Dr. Johann Siegert, this liqueur's storied legacy continues from its home in Trinidad, where it is still made today. Known for its unique blend of flavors, Angostura Aromatic Bitters carries a formidable 44.7% ABV, making it a powerful yet essential tool in the arsenal of any bartender or home mixologist. The allure of Angostura lies in its complex and mysterious flavor profile, rumored to be known by only a handful of individuals. While the precise recipe remains a closely guarded secret, enthusiasts can expect a balance of warm spices, herbs, and a subtly bitter undertone that adds depth and nuance to cocktails. This depth is precisely why it became a staple even during the restrictive Prohibition era in the United States, as its robust bitterness was deemed undrinkable on its own, yet invaluable as a cocktail enhancer. Primarily utilized as a cocktail modifier, Angostura Aromatic Bitters is an indispensable addition to classics like the Old Fashioned and the Manhattan, where just a few dashes can transform the drink's overall profile, harmonizing the elements within. For those who prefer their bitters as a digestif, it can be enjoyed neat or over ice, offering a bracingly bitter yet aromatic finish. To explore its versatility further, try adding a splash of soda, which can mellow its intensity while letting its intricate layers unfold over a longer sip. Whether you're enhancing a cocktail or simply appreciating its complex character on its own, Angostura Aromatic Bitters continues to be a testament to time-honored tradition and craftsmanship in the world of spirits.
