What makes Woodford Reserve Double Oaked different?

Double Oaked starts as regular Woodford Reserve bourbon and then spends extra time in a second, freshly charred oak barrel. That second barrel is toasted more deeply before it is charred, so the bourbon picks up more wood character on top of the base spirit.

In practice that usually means a darker, richer pour with more vanilla, toffee and toasted oak than the standard bottle. It is the one to reach for if you like your bourbon sweeter and more wood-forward.

What do Batch Proof and Barrel Strength Rye mean?

Both of these bottles are for people who want more intensity. The number in the name is the proof, and a higher proof means more alcohol by volume. Woodford Reserve Batch Proof 121.2 is bottled at 121.2 proof, and Woodford Reserve 125.1 Barrel Strength Rye is at 125.1 proof.

Barrel strength means the whiskey has not been watered down to a standard bottling strength. You get more concentrated flavor, but also more heat, so most people sip these slowly, add a few drops of water, or use a large ice cube.

How do you drink Woodford Reserve?

Neat is the simplest way, in a small glass at room temperature, so you can taste the barrel. A little water or one ice cube opens it up and softens the alcohol, which is useful with the higher proof bottles.

Woodford Reserve also suits classic whiskey cocktails. An Old Fashioned needs only bourbon, sugar, bitters and an orange peel. A Manhattan is the same idea with sweet vermouth.
