Reposado tequila: what it is and what we carry

· Updated 22 Oct 2026

Reposado tequila is 100 percent agave or mixto tequila that has rested in oak for at least two months and less than a year, which gives it a softer, rounder taste than blanco. CBC Liquors on Littleton Rd in Westford keeps a full shelf of it, and you can see what is in stock on our reposado tequila page.

What does reposado actually mean?

Reposado is Spanish for rested. By Mexican rules, a tequila labeled reposado has spent at least two months and up to one year in oak barrels or tanks. That is longer than a blanco, which is bottled unaged or after only a short rest, and shorter than an añejo, which ages one to three years.

The time in wood does two things. It softens the sharper, peppery edge of fresh agave spirit, and it adds color and flavors such as vanilla, caramel and light spice. The agave itself is still there underneath.

If you are comparing styles, our blanco and añejo shelves sit right alongside, and the wider tequila section shows all of them together.

How does reposado taste compared with blanco and añejo?

Think of reposado as the middle step. Blanco is bright, grassy and peppery. Añejo is deeper, closer to a light whiskey in feel, with more oak and dried fruit. Reposado keeps some of the fresh agave and adds a gentle layer of wood.

That balance is why it works for people who find blanco a little sharp but do not want the heavier oak of a long-aged bottle. Individual bottles vary a lot, since the barrel type, the length of rest and the style of the distillery all change the result.

Color can hint at the aging, but it is not a reliable guide, because some producers add coloring or use different barrels. Read the label for the aging statement rather than judging by shade.

Which reposado bottles does CBC Liquors carry?

Our reposado shelf includes familiar names and a few you may want to try for the first time. In stock right now are Casamigos Reposado, Don Julio Reposado, Espolon Reposado, Arette Reposado and G4 Reposado.

We also stock Jose Cuervo Gold Especial, which is a gold tequila and a different thing from a 100 percent agave reposado, so check the label on any bottle if that distinction matters to you.

How should you drink reposado?

Many people sip reposado neat or with a single large ice cube, in a small glass that lets the aroma come forward. A room-temperature pour shows the oak and agave most clearly.

It also makes a richer margarita than blanco, with a rounder, slightly toasty finish. A Paloma works well with it too: grapefruit soda, lime and a pinch of salt. For those, our mixers section has soda, tonic and other bases.

If you like a bolder drink, try reposado in place of whiskey in a simple old fashioned style with agave syrup and bitters. Whatever you make, pour it at a pace you enjoy and not faster.

Is reposado good for beginners?

For many first-time tequila drinkers, yes. The oak rounds off the sharper notes, so it tends to taste smoother than an unaged bottle. If you are used to bourbon or other barrel-aged spirits, reposado is a natural bridge, and our bourbon and whiskey shelves are nearby if you want to compare.

Look for a label that says 100 percent agave. That tells you the spirit is made only from agave sugars, not a blend with other sugars. Prices and bottle sizes vary, so ask at the counter and we will point you to something that fits what you plan to make or pour.

How do you find a rarer or harder-to-get reposado?

If you are hunting for something specific, start with the shelf online, then ask us. We carry 4,559 products from 1,880 brands, so the range goes well beyond the big names. Our Got Tequila? collection is a good place to browse the wider tequila range, and mezcal is worth a look if you want something smokier.

Some bottles are limited, and we keep a page for allocated items. For a bottle you do not see, contact the shop and ask. We cannot promise a particular bottle, but we can tell you what we have and what we can look into.

Common questions

How long is reposado tequila aged?

At least two months and less than one year in oak.

Is reposado smoother than blanco?

Usually, yes. Time in oak softens the sharper agave notes and adds vanilla and caramel flavors, though each bottle differs.

Does CBC Liquors offer delivery for reposado?

Yes. We offer delivery, pickup and shipping. Delivery runs until 8:30 PM Monday to Thursday, 9:30 PM Friday and Saturday, and 7:30 PM Sunday.

Which reposado brands are in stock?

Casamigos, Don Julio, Espolon, Arette and G4 are listed in stock now, along with Jose Cuervo Gold Especial. Check the reposado page for current availability.

What is the difference between reposado and añejo?

Añejo is aged one to three years, so it is deeper and more oak-driven. Reposado rests two to twelve months and tastes lighter and closer to agave.
