Don Julio Reposado: what it is and where to buy it

· Updated 22 Oct 2026

Don Julio Reposado is an oak-rested tequila made from blue Weber agave. It sits between the crisp, unaged blanco and the richer añejo. You can find it at CBC Liquors, 142 Littleton Rd in Westford, alongside the rest of the Don Julio range, and pick it up in store or arrange pickup or delivery.

What is Don Julio Reposado?

Don Julio Reposado is a tequila from the Don Julio family. Reposado is Spanish for rested, and it describes tequila that has spent time in oak barrels after distillation. That rest softens the sharp, peppery edge of fresh agave spirit and adds colour and flavour from the wood.

By general rule, a reposado rests for at least two months and up to a year. That puts it in the middle of the tequila aging scale: more mellow than a blanco, lighter and fresher than an añejo.

The base of any quality tequila is blue Weber agave, which is cooked, crushed, fermented and distilled. The bottle's label tells you whether the tequila is made entirely from agave. Always check for that wording when you compare bottles.

Our Don Julio Reposado Tequila is the one to ask for if you want a tequila that is smooth enough to sip and still bright enough to mix.

How is reposado different from blanco and añejo?

The difference is time in the barrel. A blanco is bottled right after distillation or after a very short rest, so you taste the agave directly: citrus, black pepper, a clean vegetal note. A reposado picks up some oak, and an añejo, aged at least a year, leans further into wood and spice.

If you like a bright, punchy drink, a blanco is the natural choice. If you want something rounder with a touch of vanilla and caramel from the barrel, a reposado fits. If you want to sip something closer to a whiskey in character, look at an añejo.

None of these is the better tequila in general. They suit different drinks and different moods, which is why it helps to know what you plan to do with the bottle before you choose.

What does Don Julio Reposado taste like?

Reposado as a style tends to show cooked agave, light oak, vanilla, a hint of caramel and a little spice, with the agave sweetness still clearly present. It is gentler on the palate than a blanco and less woody than an añejo.

That balance is why reposado is often the tequila people reach for when they want one bottle that works both neat and in a cocktail. Taste is personal, so treat any description as a guide rather than a promise.

If you are trying it for the first time, pour a small measure at room temperature, let it sit for a minute, and sip it slowly. Water or a single large ice cube opens it up without drowning it.

How should you drink Don Julio Reposado?

There are three easy ways. Neat in a small glass lets you taste the oak and agave together. On one large cube, it stays cold and dilutes slowly. In a cocktail, it adds more depth than a blanco without overwhelming the other ingredients.

For a margarita, a reposado gives a slightly warmer, rounder drink than a blanco does. Fresh lime juice and an orange liqueur are the classic partners, and a good liqueur makes a real difference. For a simple highball, tequila with sparkling water and a squeeze of lime is hard to beat, and our mixers shelf covers the rest.

Pair it with food that can handle a little richness: grilled meats, tacos al pastor, roasted vegetables, or a plate of salty snacks. As with any spirit, drink slowly and know your limit. You must be 21 or older to buy it.

Which other Don Julio bottles should you know about?

Don Julio makes a ladder of tequilas, and we carry several rungs of it. The Don Julio Blanco Tequila is the unaged expression and the one to choose for a bright margarita or a paloma. There is a second Don Julio Blanco Tequila listing in our catalogue as well, so check the label when you compare.

Stepping up in age, the Don Julio Anejo Tequila 80 Proof is aged longer than the reposado and shows more oak and spice. The Don Julio 70 Anejo Claro is an añejo that has been filtered to remove its colour, so it looks like a blanco but carries some of the softness of aging.

At the top of the range sits Don Julio 1942, the bottle people often choose for a special occasion or a gift. Tell us what you are celebrating and we can point you to the right one.

Which Don Julio is right for a gift or a party?

For a gift, think about how the person drinks. Someone who likes cocktails will use a blanco or reposado often. Someone who sips whiskey may enjoy an añejo or the 1942 more. If you are unsure, the reposado is a safe middle path because it works neat, on ice or mixed.

If you are hosting, a bottle of reposado, a bottle of blanco, plus limes, orange liqueur and some mixers lets guests build what they like. Our party planner is a good starting point when you are working out quantities for a gathering. If you would rather let the recipient choose, a gift card is another option.

Whatever you buy, serve it responsibly and make sure every guest drinking is 21 or older.

How should you store a bottle of reposado?

Keep the bottle upright, away from direct sunlight and heat, with the cap tightly closed. Tequila does not continue to age in the bottle the way wine can, so there is no benefit to cellaring it, and no need to rush through it either.

Once opened, a bottle of tequila keeps its character for a long time if it stays sealed between pours. If the level gets low and you want to keep it for months, a smaller bottle or a tight stopper helps limit air exposure.

A cool cupboard is better than a shelf above the stove. Chilling a reposado is not necessary, though some people like it cold in warm weather.

How is reposado different from añejo?
