What is the difference between blanco, reposado and añejo?

The three names describe how long the tequila rests in oak. Blanco is bottled unaged or after a very short rest, so it tastes of the agave itself: bright, peppery and clean. It is the usual choice for margaritas and palomas because it holds its character in a mixed drink.

Reposado means rested. Under Mexican rules the tequila spends at least two months and less than a year in oak. The wood softens the edges and adds a light note of vanilla and spice while the agave stays in front.

Añejo means aged. It spends at least one year and less than three in oak, which brings deeper color and a rounder, warmer taste. Extra añejo is the next step up, at three years or more. Because the spirit has had time in the barrel, añejo is often poured neat or over a single large cube.

What makes Don Julio 1942 different?

Don Julio 1942 is an añejo, aged for about two and a half years in oak. That sits inside the one-to-three-year window for the añejo category, so it is a long-rested añejo rather than a different class of tequila.

That time in the barrel is what you taste: caramel, toasted oak and a soft finish that suits slow sipping. Most people serve it neat in a small glass, with no mixer getting in the way.

If you are choosing between the standard Don Julio Añejo and 1942, ask us at the counter. Both are añejos, so the difference is in the age and the profile in the glass, and we are happy to talk through which fits what you plan to pour.

What is Don Julio 70 Añejo Claro?

Don Julio 70 Añejo Claro is an añejo that has been filtered after aging so it comes out clear instead of amber. You get the softer, rounder character that oak gives, in a bottle that looks like a blanco.

That makes it a useful middle ground. It is smooth enough to sip, and it also works in a cocktail where you want a bit of barrel depth without the color of a darker añejo.

If you usually reach for blanco but find it a little sharp neat, the Claro is a good one to try next.

How should you serve Don Julio?

Serve Don Julio Blanco in a margarita with fresh lime and a splash of orange liqueur, or in a paloma with grapefruit and a pinch of salt. Our mixers shelf covers the supporting cast, and you can pick up a liqueur there too if you are building a classic margarita.

Reposado is the flexible one. It makes a richer margarita, and it also holds up when you sip it with a lime wedge on the side.

Añejo, 1942 and the Claro are better in a glass on their own. Pour a small measure, let it open for a minute, and take your time with it. Whatever you pour, pace yourself and keep the evening easy.
