Añejo tequila: what it is and where to find bottles

· Updated 22 Oct 2026

Añejo tequila is 100 percent agave or mixto tequila aged in oak for at least one year and less than three. That time in wood gives it a deeper color and a smoother, more spirit-forward taste than blanco or reposado, and you can browse the full range on our tequila page.

What makes a tequila añejo?

Under Mexican rules, añejo means the tequila has rested in oak barrels for a minimum of one year and under three. Anything aged three years or longer moves into extra añejo. The word itself is Spanish for aged or old.

The oak does the work. Over time the spirit picks up color and flavors such as vanilla, caramel, baking spice and toasted wood, while the sharper agave edge softens. Many añejos still keep some cooked agave sweetness underneath.

If you want to compare the aged styles side by side, we have separate pages for Añejo and Extra Añejo.

How is añejo different from blanco and reposado?

Blanco is unaged or rested only briefly, so it tastes bright, peppery and green. Reposado rests for two months up to a year, which gives a light gold color and a gentle oak note. Añejo goes further, with more wood, more depth and a rounder finish.

At CBC Liquors you can see the whole ladder in one place. Blanco and Reposado shelves sit alongside the aged bottles, so you can taste your way up if you are new to the style.

We also carry CASAMIGOS Blanco Tequila and CASAMIGOS Reposado Tequila, a handy pair if you want to compare how aging changes one brand's character.

What about cristalino and extra añejo?

Cristalino starts as an aged tequila, often añejo or extra añejo, and is then filtered to remove the color. The result looks clear like a blanco but usually tastes softer and rounder than an unaged tequila. You can look at our cristalino tequila selection to try it.

Extra añejo is the longest aged category, three years or more in oak. It tends to be darker, richer and closer in feel to a fine aged whiskey or cognac. It is usually a sipping tequila rather than something you mix.

Because the aged end of tequila is made in smaller quantities, these bottles can be harder to find than everyday blancos.

How do you drink añejo tequila?

Most people sip añejo neat in a small glass, such as a snifter or a copita, so the aromas can open up. A few drops of water or a single large ice cube are fine if you prefer it softer.

It also works in spirit-forward cocktails. An old fashioned made with añejo instead of bourbon is a common swap, and the oak notes suit stirred drinks better than juicy, shaken ones.

For margaritas and highballs, a blanco is usually the better pick. Keep añejo for slow drinking and enjoy it responsibly.

Which other tequilas does CBC Liquors carry?

Not every search ends at añejo. If you want something for mixing, we carry ESPOLON Blanco Tequila and LALO Blanco Tequila. For easy, familiar bottles, there are Jose Cuervo Gold Especial and Jose Cuervo Silver Especial.

Our Got Tequila? collection pulls more of the range together, and Flavored Tequila is there if that is your taste. For smoky agave spirits, look at mezcal.

If you like aged spirits generally, our whiskey and brandy and cognac shelves are good neighbors to an añejo.

Common questions

How long is añejo tequila aged?

At least one year and less than three years in oak barrels. Three years or more is extra añejo.

Is añejo tequila meant for sipping?

Usually yes. Many people drink it neat or with a little ice, and it also suits stirred cocktails like an old fashioned.

What is the difference between añejo and reposado?

Reposado rests two months to a year, while añejo ages one to three years, so añejo is darker and has more oak character.
