Mast Landing Solidus

SOLIDUS is a specialty beer from Mast Landing in Maine. The listing doesn't give a style, ABV or IBU, so the tasting notes below are what to expect from craft beers in this category, not a measured profile of this bottling. Specialty beers from small New England breweries tend to prioritize a distinct hop, malt or fermentation character over a strict style template. Check the label for the ABV and any style designation before choosing food or glassware. For serving, a craft beer of this kind is usually best at about 45 to 50°F (7 to 10°C), which is cool but not fridge-cold. At that temperature the hop aroma, malt sweetness and any yeast character come through. If the label points to a hop-forward or hazy style, serve it toward the cooler end of that range and drink it reasonably fresh. If it reads as a stronger, darker or barrel-influenced beer, let it warm a few minutes in the glass. A tulip or a stemmed teku-style glass suits most specialty beers because it holds the aroma and keeps a foam head. A nonic pint or a standard tumbler works for a lighter, more sessionable beer. Pour at an angle, then straighten the glass so the head forms. Leave any yeast sediment in the bottle unless the label says it belongs in the glass. On the table, a mid-strength craft beer pairs well with grilled sausages, sharp cheddar, roast chicken, fish tacos or a burger. If the beer turns out to be bitter and hoppy, it will also stand up to spicy dishes. If it is malt-forward, try it with roasted vegetables, smoked meats or aged cheese. Mast Landing is a Maine brewery, so Maine seafood such as steamed mussels or fried clams is a natural regional match.
