Zenato Pinot Grigio

Zenato's Pinot Grigio comes from the Veneto in northeastern Italy and is made as a dry white from Pinot Grigio grapes. The style is crisp and light-bodied, with citrus and green apple as the main fruit notes and a clean, refreshing finish. Wines like this are typically built around freshness rather than weight. Expect a pale, bright color, moderate to lively acidity, no perceptible oak, and no tannin to speak of, since white wines of this type are fermented and aged in stainless steel to keep the fruit and acidity in focus. That lean, high-acid profile makes it a natural match for light, simple food. Raw and lightly cooked shellfish are the obvious fit: oysters, steamed clams, grilled prawns, or a plate of fried calamari with lemon. It also suits delicate white fish such as sole or sea bass, salads with a sharp vinaigrette, and vegetable-led dishes like asparagus risotto or zucchini pasta. Salty starters such as prosciutto with melon or a mild fresh cheese work well because the acidity cuts through the salt and fat. Heavily spiced, rich, or cream-based dishes will tend to overwhelm a wine of this weight, so steer toward lighter preparations. Serve it well chilled, around 7 to 10°C (45 to 50°F), which keeps the citrus and apple notes sharp and the finish clean. Pulling it from the refrigerator ten minutes before pouring takes the edge off without dulling the fruit. There is no need to decant; simply open and pour. A standard white wine glass with a modest bowl, narrower than a red wine glass, will concentrate the aromatics and help hold the temperature. This is a bottle to drink young. Light, unoaked Pinot Grigio is made for its freshness and is best enjoyed within a couple of years of the vintage rather than laid down, as the bright fruit and crisp acidity are the point and tend to fade rather than develop with age.
