Ommegang Passport Royale

Passport Royale from Ommegang is a testament to the art of Belgian-style brewing, skillfully reimagined on New York's fertile lands. With an ABV of 7.5%, this beer captures the distinctive character of Belgian ales, offering a balanced blend of richness and complexity. Expect a vibrant harmony of malt sweetness and hoppy bitterness, as its IBU of 35 suggests a measured, yet evident, bitter profile typical of the style. Pouring a golden hue with a frothy white head, Passport Royale invites you into a world of nuanced flavors. Common to beers of this type, you can anticipate notes of ripe fruits like banana and pear, underscored by the subtle spice of clove and coriander. The mouthfeel is smooth, with a medium body that carries a gentle carbonation, enhancing the beer's refreshing qualities. The finish is clean, leaving a pleasant aftertaste that lingers just long enough to entice the next sip. For the optimal tasting experience, serve this Belgian-style beer at a slightly chilled temperature, around 45-50°F, to allow its aromas and flavors to fully emerge. A tulip glass is an excellent choice to capture the beer's aromatic complexity and support its enticing head. Although not necessary, decanting could help open up its bouquet if you're feeling particularly sophisticated. Passport Royale's versatile profile pairs beautifully with a range of dishes. It complements the umami of roasted meats, the earthiness of mushroom risottos, and stands up to the robust flavors of aged cheeses. While it is delightful right now, this beer, like many Belgian-style ales, has the potential to age gracefully, developing deeper notes over time. Whether you're a seasoned aficionado or a curious newcomer to Belgian-style beers, Passport Royale offers a genuine taste of Ommegang's adept craftsmanship.
