Zenato Lugana

Zenato Lugana is a dry Italian white from the Lugana appellation on the southern shore of Lake Garda, where the vineyards straddle the border between Veneto and Lombardy. It is built on Turbiana, the local name for Trebbiano di Lugana, and it carries 13% alcohol. Styles like this typically show citrus and white-flower aromatics, a touch of almond on the finish, and a mineral edge. The reference profile for this bottling points the same way: fresh, mineral, and meant to be enjoyed young. In the glass, expect a light-to-medium body with crisp, lively acidity and no oak influence to speak of. The fruit tends toward lemon, green apple and perhaps a little stone fruit, with the almond note arriving late and giving the finish a gentle bitterness that keeps the wine clean rather than sweet. Tannin is not a factor in a white of this kind. The texture is where Turbiana often stands out from other Italian whites such as Pinot Grigio: it usually has a bit more weight and savoury length without losing its freshness. Serve it well chilled, around 8 to 10°C, which keeps the acidity bright and the aromatics intact. It does not need decanting; simply open, pour and let it warm slightly in the glass if it feels too tight. A standard white wine glass or a modest tulip shape is ideal, as it concentrates the floral and citrus notes without exaggerating the alcohol. At the table, the lake origin suggests fish: grilled or baked freshwater fish, sea bass, risotto with lemon or herbs, and light seafood pastas all suit its acidity and gentle almond finish. It also handles young cheeses, vegetable antipasti, prosciutto with melon, and chicken or veal in a light sauce. Treat it as a bottle to drink now, within a couple of years of its vintage, rather than one to cellar.
