Põhjala Jouluporter

Põhjala's Jouluporter is a seasonal Christmas porter from a craft brewery in Tallinn, Estonia. "Joulu" is the Estonian word for Christmas, and that is the idea behind the beer. Christmas porters of this kind are usually dark brown to black, with a tan head that holds well. Expect roasted malt up front, in the register of dark chocolate, coffee and toasted bread crust. Winter-leaning versions often add dried fruit, caramel or gingerbread-type spice. The body tends to run medium to full and the carbonation moderate, so the beer feels round and slow-drinking rather than sharp. Bitterness is generally restrained and comes mainly from the roast, not from hops. The finish is usually dry to off-dry and carries a lingering cocoa or toasted note. Food is where a porter like this works hardest. The roast and light sweetness suit braised pork, smoked sausage, roast duck and game, and also cured and smoked fish, which fits the Baltic table.
