E&J Apple Brandy

E&J Apple Brandy is a flavored brandy from California, bottled at 30% ABV (60 proof). That is well below the 40% of a standard VS, VSOP or XO, so it belongs with the apple-flavored brandy liqueurs and not with aged cognac. It carries no age statement, and the VS/VSOP/XO scale doesn't apply to it. Expect a sweet, ripe-apple profile over a soft brandy base, with the fruit forward and little of the oak, dried-fruit or spice depth that aged grape brandy shows. The lower strength changes how you serve it. Neat in a small snifter or tulip glass at cool room temperature, it should come across as gentle and sweet, and the glass will concentrate the apple aroma. Many people prefer it chilled, either stored in the refrigerator or poured over a large ice cube in a rocks glass, because cold tightens the sweetness and keeps it from feeling syrupy. Served over ice with a splash of soda water or ginger beer, it makes an easy long drink, and a squeeze of lemon helps balance the sugar. In cocktails, treat it as a sweet ingredient and not as a drop-in for cognac. In a Sidecar, which is built on 40% spirit, it will make the drink noticeably sweeter and lighter. If you try it there, cut back the orange liqueur and use a full measure of fresh lemon juice. A Brandy Alexander with cream and crème de cacao is less natural, since apple and chocolate don't pair obviously, but a smaller pour can work if you want a fruitier version. A Sazerac depends on the dry, spicy bite of rye or high-proof cognac, and a 30% apple brandy would be too sweet and too light for it. For hot drinks it is a better fit: warm it with cinnamon and a little cider, or add it to a hot toddy. For food, think of apple-based desserts such as tarts, crisps and baked apples, or a sharp cheddar and a bowl of sliced fruit. Keep opened bottles tightly closed and out of direct light and heat. Because of the lower alcohol and added sugar, flavor can drift slowly over time, so use it within a reasonable period after opening.
