Description
Merry Edwards' Anderson Valley Chardonnay comes from one of California's coolest grape-growing regions, where Pacific fog and marine air hold back ripeness and keep acidity bright. That setting shapes the style. Chardonnay from Anderson Valley typically leans toward orchard and citrus fruit rather than tropical richness. Expect green apple, pear and lemon peel, with a possible touch of white peach or stone fruit. The palate is usually medium-bodied with crisp, fresh acidity that gives the wine tension and lift. Merry Edwards is better known for Pinot Noir, but the cool-climate approach carries over: the wine's energy comes from acidity and fruit purity more than from weight. Like most Chardonnay, it has no tannin to speak of. Any structure comes from acidity and, if the winemaker used oak, from the texture of barrel aging. Where oak is used, it often shows as subtle toast, vanilla or baking spice, and it can add a creamy, rounded feel in the mid-palate. I haven't been given the specifics of the cooperage or fermentation for this bottle, so take that as a typical expectation for the style and not a fixed description. In cool-climate examples the finish tends to run moderately long, with citrus and a mineral or saline edge. At the table, this style suits dishes that match its freshness. Roast chicken with lemon and herbs, seared scallops, Dungeness crab, halibut or salmon with a beurre blanc all work well. So do creamy pasta, risotto with mushrooms or sweet corn, and soft cheeses such as brie or young Gruyère. The acidity cuts through butter and cream, and a little oak spice flatters roasted poultry and squash. Very spicy dishes and heavy red-sauce preparations are a weaker match. Serve it lightly chilled, around 50 to 55°F (10 to 13°C). Straight from a cold refrigerator it will taste muted, so pull it out about 15 minutes before pouring. Decanting isn't needed, though a few minutes in the glass will open the aromas. A white wine glass with a moderately wide bowl, or a slightly larger Chardonnay-style glass, lets the fruit and any oak notes develop while keeping the acidity in focus. Wines like this are generally enjoyed within a few years of release for their fresh fruit. Some can develop more nutty, honeyed complexity with a few years of careful cellaring, but I can't speak to the aging potential of this particular vintage, so check the bottle's vintage and the producer's guidance before cellaring it.
