Woodford Reserve Batch Proof: what it is and where to buy

· Updated 22 Oct 2026

Woodford Reserve Batch Proof is a uncut, barrel-strength style bourbon bottled at the proof of each release, so the number changes from batch to batch. CBC Liquors in Westford carries Woodford Reserve Batch Proof 121.2, and you can see everything else we stock from the maker on the Woodford Reserve brand page.

What is Woodford Reserve Batch Proof?

Batch Proof is a higher-proof bourbon from Woodford Reserve. Instead of being cut with water to a standard bottling strength, it is bottled at a high proof, and the proof is printed in the name of the release. That is why you see numbers like 121.2 on the label.

Because the strength is set by each batch rather than by a fixed target, two releases can differ in proof and in how they taste. If you are hunting a particular release, check the number on the bottle against the one you want.

The bottle we carry is Woodford Reserve Batch Proof 121.2. If you are looking for a different proof, ask us and we will tell you what is on the shelf.

What does the proof number mean?

Proof is twice the alcohol by volume in the United States. A bourbon at 121.2 proof is 60.6 percent alcohol by volume, well above the 80 to 90 proof of many everyday bourbons.

That extra strength carries more of the flavor from the barrel: more oak, caramel, spice and baking-spice weight. It also means the bourbon feels hotter and more intense in the glass. It is a spirit to sip slowly, not to rush.

Barrel strength and cask strength generally mean a whiskey bottled without dilution to a lower proof. Batch proof follows the same idea, with the proof stated for that particular batch.

How is it different from Woodford Reserve Straight Bourbon?

The everyday bottle, Woodford Reserve Straight Bourbon, is bottled at a lower, standard proof. It is smoother and easier to pour neat, over ice or in a cocktail.

Batch Proof is the same house in a more concentrated form. If you already like the standard bottle, the higher proof is a way to taste the same distillery with more weight and a longer finish.

If you are new to high-proof whiskey, starting with the standard bottle and moving up once you know your taste is a sensible path.

How should you drink a 121.2 proof bourbon?

Pour a small measure neat in a glass with a bit of room to breathe, and take a small first sip. Many people add a few drops of water or a single large ice cube, which softens the heat and opens up the aroma.

It also works in an old fashioned or a Manhattan, though the strength means you will want to taste as you build the drink. A little goes further than you expect.

Keep the bottle upright, out of sunlight and away from heat. An opened bottle keeps well for a good while if the cap is tight.

What other Woodford Reserve bottles do we carry?

If you came for a rare or limited bottle, look at the rest of the line. We carry Woodford Reserve Holiday Edition, Woodford Reserve 125.1 Barrel Strength Rye and Woodford Reserve Madeira Cask.

The barrel strength rye is for readers who prefer a spicier, drier profile than bourbon gives. The Madeira Cask is a finished bourbon, aged further in casks that held Madeira wine, which adds a different kind of sweetness.
