Orange liqueur: what it is and how to use it

· Updated 22 Oct 2026

Orange liqueur is a sweetened spirit flavored with orange peel, sold as triple sec, curaçao or a richer cognac-based style. It is the orange in a margarita, a cosmopolitan and a sidecar. Here is how the styles differ, what to mix with them, and where to look when you shop at CBC Liquors on Littleton Rd.

What is orange liqueur?

Orange liqueur is a spirit that has been flavored with orange peel and sweetened. The peel, usually from bitter oranges and sometimes from sweet ones, is steeped or distilled with a neutral spirit or brandy, then sugar is added. Depending on the bottle, the result lands somewhere between about 15 and 40 percent alcohol by volume.

The bitter peel is what gives it a bright, slightly dry orange character rather than the taste of orange juice or candy. That is why a small measure goes a long way in a cocktail.

In our store you will find it under liqueur, the section for sweetened, flavored spirits. It sits there with cream, mint, fruit and aperitivo bottles rather than with the base spirits like vodka or tequila.

Triple sec, curaçao, Cointreau, Grand Marnier: what is the difference?

Triple sec is the broadest term. It usually means a clear, sweet, orange-flavored liqueur with a clean peel flavor, and it is the style most recipes mean when they just say orange liqueur. The name is often explained as French for triple dry, though the story behind it is debated.

Curaçao takes its name from the Caribbean island where a bitter orange called laraha grows. A curaçao can be clear, amber or orange, and the blue one is simply colored; the color does not change the flavor. Some curaçaos are a little richer and more bitter than a typical triple sec.

Cointreau is a well-known French brand in the clear triple sec style. Grand Marnier is different in kind: it is built on cognac, so it is deeper, rounder and heavier, with a warm brandy backbone. If you like cognac, the brandy and cognac section is the neighbor to browse for that kind of drinking.

What do you use orange liqueur for?

Three classic cocktails lean on it. A margarita is tequila, orange liqueur and lime juice. A cosmopolitan is vodka, orange liqueur, cranberry and lime. A sidecar is cognac, orange liqueur and lemon juice. In each, the liqueur adds sweetness and a bitter orange edge that rounds off the sour citrus.

It also turns up outside the cocktail shaker. A spoonful can go into whipped cream, a fruit salad, a chocolate sauce, crêpe batter or the glaze on a cake. Cooks often use a little where a recipe asks for orange zest and a touch of sweetness together.

Because it is sweet, measure it. Most recipes call for half an ounce to an ounce, and more than that tips a drink from balanced to syrupy.

Which orange liqueur is best for a margarita?

For a bright, clean margarita, reach for a clear triple sec style. It lets the tequila and lime come through and keeps the drink pale and sharp. A curaçao adds a little more bitterness and depth, which some people prefer with an aged tequila. A cognac-based liqueur makes a richer, warmer margarita, often called a Cadillac, that suits cooler evenings.

A dependable ratio is two parts tequila, one part orange liqueur and one part fresh lime juice, shaken with ice and strained. Start with a blanco tequila for a crisp result, and squeeze the limes yourself if you can.

If you are building drinks for guests, the mixers section covers the sodas and extras that go alongside. For anything bigger, the party planner is the place to start.

What else is in the liqueur section?

Liqueur is a wide family, and orange is only one flavor in it. Our liqueur section includes Baileys Original Irish Cream, which people pour over ice or into coffee, and the minty DR MCGILLICUDDYS Mentholmint, a classic cold shot or hot chocolate addition.

For fruit flavors there is DR MCGILLICUDDYS Wild Grape and 99 Watermelons Schnapps. For something with warmth there is Fireball TORCH'D VANILLA.

Sarti ROSA APERITIVO sits in the same section and is a different idea again: an Italian-style aperitivo, usually served before a meal with soda or sparkling wine and ice. If a recipe calls for orange bitters, those are a separate product used by the dash, and the bitters page is where to look.

How should you store orange liqueur, and can you substitute it?

Sugar and alcohol make liqueur stable, so an unopened bottle keeps well in a cupboard away from heat and sunlight. Once opened, close the cap tightly and keep it somewhere cool and dark. The flavor fades slowly over a long stretch rather than spoiling, and a bottle that has sat open for years may taste flatter and sweeter than it did.

If a recipe needs orange liqueur and you do not have it, the closest swaps are another orange liqueur style: triple sec for curaçao, or the reverse. A cognac-based one works in place of a clear one, though the drink will come out darker and richer.

Orange juice with a pinch of sugar will do in a pinch for baking, but it is not a substitute in a cocktail, because it brings none of the bitter peel edge or the alcohol that gives the drink its structure.

Common questions

Is triple sec the same as orange liqueur?

Triple sec is a style of orange liqueur: clear, sweet and bright. Curaçao and cognac-based liqueurs are other styles, so all triple sec is orange liqueur but not all orange liqueur is triple sec.

What is the difference between Cointreau and Grand Marnier?

Cointreau is a clear, triple sec style liqueur. Grand Marnier is made with a cognac base, which makes it richer, warmer and heavier.

Where do I find orange liqueur at CBC Liquors?

Does blue curaçao taste different from clear triple sec?

The blue color is added dye, and the flavor is orange in the same way. Some blue curaçaos taste a little sweeter or less sharp than a clear triple sec.
