Glenlivet 1824 is the name of a range of Speyside single malt Scotch whiskies from Glenlivet, and 1824 is the year the distillery's founder took out a licence to distil legally. At CBC Liquors on Littleton Rd in Westford, you can pick up the Glenlivet 1824 Founders Reserve and the Glenlivet 1824 Caribbean Reserve in store, or order them for pickup or delivery.
What does Glenlivet 1824 mean?
The number is a date, not an age. In 1824, after a change in the law made legal distilling workable in the Scottish Highlands, George Smith licensed his farm distillery in the Livet valley in Speyside. Glenlivet counts that licence as the start of the distillery, and the 1824 name nods to it.
So when you see 1824 on a bottle, do not read it as 'aged 1824' or as a vintage. It is the name of a collection that sits alongside the age-statement bottles such as the 12, 14 and 15 year old expressions.
The bottles in the 1824 line are single malts. That means the whisky comes from one distillery and is made from malted barley only. Glenlivet is a Speyside distillery, and Speyside malts are generally known for a fruit-forward, softer style rather than a heavy, smoky one.
If you searched for 'glenlivet 1824' because a friend mentioned the name or you saw it on a shelf, the Founders Reserve is the bottle most people mean. The Caribbean Reserve is the one with a twist in how it is finished.
Which Glenlivet 1824 bottles does CBC Liquors carry?
The whole range sits on our Glenlivet brand page, with our own best sellers shown first. Two of the products there carry the 1824 name:
The Glenlivet 1824 Founders Reserve is the entry point to the collection and the bottle the search usually lands on. The Glenlivet 1824 Caribbean Reserve is the other bottle with the 1824 name, and the name points to a Caribbean influence on the whisky's finish.
We also carry the age-statement bottles from the same distillery: the Glenlivet 12 Year, the Glenlivet 15 French Oak Reserve, the Glenlivet 14 Year Cognac Cask and the Glenlivet 12 Year Rum Cask Edition.
Stock moves, so if you are driving over for one specific bottle, check the product page first or call the shop before you head out.

How is the Founders Reserve different from the 12 Year?
The simplest difference is how each bottle is named. The 12 Year carries an age statement: by law, the youngest whisky in the bottle has spent at least twelve years in oak. The Founders Reserve carries no age statement. It is built by blending casks for a style, rather than for a number on the label.
That does not make a no-age-statement whisky better or worse. It means the maker has more freedom to choose casks for flavour and consistency. Plenty of good Scotch is sold this way.
In general terms, Glenlivet's house character is light, fruity and gently sweet, with orchard fruit and honeyed notes common in Speyside malts. The 12 Year is the classic benchmark of that style. The Founders Reserve is aimed at the same easy-drinking profile.
If you want a straight like-for-like comparison, buy both and taste them side by side at home. Pour a small measure of each, add the same few drops of water, and see which one you reach for again.
What is a cask finish, and why do the Caribbean and Cognac bottles matter?
Most single malt Scotch is matured in oak casks that held something else before, often bourbon or sherry. The wood gives colour and flavour, and what the cask held before leaves its mark on the whisky.
A finish is an extra step. The whisky is moved for a period into a different cask, which adds another layer. The Glenlivet 1824 Caribbean Reserve and the Glenlivet 12 Year Rum Cask Edition both point to rum cask influence in their names. The 14 Year Cognac Cask points to a brandy cask, and the 15 French Oak Reserve points to French oak.
If you already like Scotch and want to try something a little different, a finished bottle is a sensible next step. If you are buying for someone who is new to whisky, the plainer Founders Reserve or 12 Year is usually the easier starting point.
You do not need to memorise any of this. Ask at the counter and we will tell you what the bottle in your hand is and how it differs from the one next to it.
How should you drink Glenlivet 1824?
Neat is the way most people try a single malt for the first time. Use a tulip-shaped glass or a small snifter if you have one, pour a modest measure, and give it a minute before the first sip.
A few drops of room-temperature water can open up the aroma and soften the alcohol. Ice will chill the whisky and mute some of the flavour, but it is a perfectly reasonable way to drink Scotch if that is what you enjoy.
A lighter Speyside malt also works in a simple highball: Scotch, a good mixer such as soda water, and plenty of ice. It is a refreshing way to drink it without covering up what the whisky is doing.
Whatever you choose, sip it slowly. A bottle like this is made to be tasted, and there is no reason to hurry through it.
Is Glenlivet 1824 a good gift?
A boxed single malt is a familiar gift for a birthday, a retirement, a housewarming or a thank-you, and the Glenlivet name is easy to recognise. A gift is for an adult of legal drinking age, and a bottle given to someone is best matched to what they already enjoy.
If you do not know the person's taste, the 12 Year or the Founders Reserve is the safer choice, because the style is approachable. If they already drink Scotch, a cask finish such as the 14 Year Cognac Cask or the 15 French Oak Reserve gives them something they might not have tried.
If you cannot decide, a gift card lets the person choose for themselves. And if you are putting together a gathering rather than a single present, our party planner is a good place to start.
