What is the difference between blanco, reposado and añejo?
The three words describe how long the tequila rests in oak after distilling, and that time changes both colour and flavour.
Blanco is bottled unaged or after a very short rest, usually no more than two months. It is the clearest and most direct style: bright, peppery and herbal, with the cooked agave plant coming through. You can browse more in our blanco tequila section.
Reposado means rested. It spends between two months and a year in oak, which softens the edges and adds notes of vanilla, caramel and light spice. The reposado tequila shelf has more to compare.
Añejo means aged. It spends one to three years in oak, which gives it a deeper amber colour and a rounder, warmer character closer to a lightly aged whiskey.
How do you drink 818 tequila?
Blanco is the usual choice for cocktails because its clean agave flavour holds up against citrus. A margarita, a paloma with grapefruit soda, or a simple tequila and soda with lime are all common ways to serve it.
Reposado works in the same drinks if you want a little more warmth, and it is also easy to sip on its own with a large ice cube. Añejo is generally kept for sipping, in a small glass, slowly and without much else added.
If you are mixing at home, our mixers section has sodas, tonics and other bottles that suit tequila drinks, so you can pick up everything in one visit.
What should you check on a tequila label?
The most useful thing to look for is the words 100% agave. Tequila made from 100% blue Weber agave uses only that plant for its sugars, while a bottle without that statement can include other sugars. It is a general point worth checking on any tequila you buy, so read the label on the bottle in your hand.
The age statement, blanco, reposado or añejo, tells you how long it rested in oak. The label also carries a distillery code called an NOM, which identifies where the tequila was made.
If you are not sure how a style will taste, ask us. It is quicker than guessing at the shelf, and a good way to match a bottle to what you plan to make.
