1911 Haunted Hayride

HAUNTED HAYRIDE is a hard cider from 1911, made in New York, a state with a long apple-growing tradition. The name points to the fall season. Producers in this seasonal lane often lean toward baked-apple, cinnamon and brown-sugar notes rather than a sharp, dry profile, so expect something along those lines. The label details we have don't give an ABV, a sweetness level or an ingredient list, so check the bottle or can for those before you buy. Ciders in this autumn-spiced style are usually best served cold but not icy. Aim for roughly 40 to 50°F. Straight from a cold fridge, the apple and spice tend to go quiet. Ten to fifteen minutes on the counter before pouring lets the aroma open up. A tulip glass or a stemmed beer glass suits it well, since the narrowing at the rim holds the apple and spice aromas. A standard pint glass also works if you're pouring a larger serving. Pour gently down the side of the glass, because cider carbonation can foam quickly. At the table, spiced apple ciders work best with foods that share their flavors or offset the sweetness. Roast pork, pork chops with mustard or apple chutney, and smoked sausages are natural matches. Sharp cheddar, aged gouda and other firm, nutty cheeses cut through any residual sweetness. For dessert, apple crumble, cinnamon sugar donuts or pumpkin-based sweets echo the spice rather than competing with it. It also suits a fall cookout, where the apple character can stand up to grilled meats and caramelized onions.
